This county (there is no "Charles City") is bordered on the north by the Chickahominy River and on the south by the James River. It is primarily known for its historic colonial-era plantations along the banks of the James. Twenty-three sites are listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and many are open for tours. Berkeley Plantation was the site for the First Thanksgiving on Dec. 4, 1619 - |
 one year and 17 days before Plymouth Rock's. Other popular plantations include Shirley, Westover, Sherwood Forest, Evelynton, Edgewood, and Belle Air. The Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries has established a 5,300-acre recreational and wildlife management area in the eastern section of the county, which is open for fishing, hunting, hiking and wildlife watching.
