Many of the County Links on the left will keep you specifically in or near Highland County in the Shenandoah Valley Area of Virginia. We add new listings and links on a regular basis so bookmark this page and check back often.

Highland County is located in the Allegheny Mountains midway between the eastern border of West Virginia and western border of the famed Shenandoah Valley. The headwaters of the James and Potomac Rivers are located here. The contrast of its high, narrow ridges forested in hardwoods and our broad, open valleys is breathtaking.

Often referred to as "Virginia's Switzerland" this land of high mountain valleys, sheep and cattle grazing farms and vast woodlands is known for its pristine scenic beauty and rural charm. It is one of the least populated counties in the east and boasts one of the highest mean elevations of any county east of the Mississippi River.

The average elevation of Highland County is 2,832 feet, which is the 16th highest average elevation among counties in the Eastern United States. The highest elevation in the county is 4,545 feet in the Allegheny Mountains and the lowest elevation is 1,625 feet near the Cowpasture River southwest of Patna.

Highland County contains parts of the George Washington National Forest concentrated mainly along the county's western and eastern borders, and the Highland Wildlife Management Area, held by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. The national forest and Highland Wildlife Management Area combined account for 71,455 acres, or approximately 28% of the county's total land area.

SKYLINE DRIVE...
The Skyline Drive runs 105 miles north and south along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Shenandoah National Park and is the only public road through the park. You can enter Shenandoah at four places: Front Royal near Rt. 66 and 340, Thornton Gap at Rt. 211, Swift Run Gap at Rt. 33, and Rockfish Gap at Rt. 64 and Rt. 250 (also the northern entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway). It takes about three hours to travel the entire length of the park on a clear day.

As you travel along Skyline Drive you will notice mileposts on the west side (right side if you are traveling south) of the road. These posts help you find your way through the park and help you locate areas of interest. The mileposts begin with 0.0 at Front Royal and continue to 105 at the southern end of the park.

The speed limit is 35 mph, so you can roll down your windows, feel the breeze and experience every curve and turn of this beautiful drive. There are 75 overlooks that offer stunning views of the Shenandoah Valley to the west or the rolling Piedmont to the east. The park purposely leaves the roadsides unmowed so wildflowers put on a show all year long.
